Allergic contact dermatitis

An intensely itchy, eczematous rash on the scalp, often caused by an allergen in hair dye or other hair products.

Dissecting cellulitis

A rare, suppurative scarring alopecia with painful, boggy nodules and abscesses on the scalp that form interconnecting sinus tracts.

Eczema

Atopic or contact dermatitis of the scalp presenting with erythema, scaling, and intense pruritus.

Erosive pustular dermatosis

A condition in the elderly, often on a sun-damaged scalp, with chronic, sterile pustules, erosions, and crusts that heal with scarring alopecia.

Folliculitis

Inflammation of hair follicles, presenting as multiple, small, tender, erythematous papules and pustules at the base of hairs.

Head lice

Infestation with pediculosis capitis causes intense itching, leading to secondary excoriations, eczema, and sometimes impetigo, with visible nits on hair shafts.

Psoriasis

Presents as well-demarcated, erythematous plaques with a thick, silvery-white scale that often extends beyond the hairline.

Seborrhoiec dermatitis

A very common cause of 'dandruff,' with diffuse, greasy, yellowish scales on an erythematous base.
