Actinic keratosis

A pre-malignant lesion presenting as a rough, scaly, sandpaper-like patch on the sun-exposed helix of the ear.

Adnexal tumours

A broad category of tumors arising from skin appendages, which can present as various firm papules or nodules on the ear.

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia

Presents as pink-to-red papules or nodules, often on or around the ear, and is characterized by a proliferation of blood vessels and lymphocytes.

Atheroma

An epidermoid cyst on the earlobe, presenting as a smooth, soft, subcutaneous nodule.

Auricular appendage

A common congenital anomaly appearing as a skin tag or accessory piece of cartilage, usually anterior to the tragus.

Basal cell carcinoma

A common skin cancer on the ear appearing as a pearly papule with telangiectasias, which may ulcerate.

Blue naevus

A benign mole that appears as a small, well-defined, blue-black, dome-shaped papule.

Bowen's disease

A form of squamous cell carcinoma in situ, presenting as a persistent, well-demarcated, red, scaly plaque.

Chilblain

Painful, itchy, red-to-purple inflammatory papules and nodules on the helix of the ear after exposure to cold.

Chondrodermatitis nodularis helicis

An exquisitely tender, small, firm, ulcerated nodule located on the pressure-bearing helix or antihelix of the ear.

Cutaneous horn

A conical or cylindrical projection of compact keratin, resembling a small horn, often arising from an underlying actinic keratosis or squamous cell carcinoma.

Cylindroma

A benign adnexal tumor that can present as a solitary or multiple smooth, pink nodules, sometimes on the ear or scalp ("turban tumor").

Discoid lupus erythematosis

Presents as erythematous, atrophic plaques with adherent scale and follicular plugging, often within the conchal bowl of the ear.

Epidermoid cyst

A firm, dome-shaped subcutaneous nodule, commonly behind the ear or on the lobe, which may have a central punctum.

Gouty tophi

Deposits of uric acid crystals forming firm, white-to-yellowish subcutaneous nodules on the helix of the ear.

Granuloma annulare

Can present as a ring of firm, skin-colored or erythematous papules without surface scale on the ear.

Keloid

An overgrowth of scar tissue, often following ear piercing, that forms a firm, smooth, rubbery nodule on the earlobe.

Lentigo maligna

A form of melanoma in situ on sun-damaged skin, appearing as a slowly enlarging, irregularly pigmented brown-to-black macule.

Lymphocytoma

A benign B-cell proliferation, often from a tick bite, presenting as a solitary, soft, reddish-brown to violaceous nodule on the earlobe.

Melanoma

A malignant tumor appearing as an asymmetric, irregularly bordered, variably colored, and evolving pigmented lesion.

Rheumatoid nodule

A firm, non-tender, subcutaneous nodule that can occur on the ear in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Seborrhoiec keratosis

A benign, waxy, "stuck-on" papule or plaque with a verrucous surface, common on the ear in older individuals.

Squamous cell carcinoma

A skin cancer presenting as a crusted, scaly, indurated, and often ulcerated nodule on sun-exposed parts of the ear.
