Eczema

This is the underlying condition, but it is distinguished from uncomplicated eczema by the sudden, acute eruption of painful, monomorphic vesicles or "punched-out" erosions.

Hand foot and mouth disease

This viral illness has a characteristic distribution of lesions on the hands, feet, and mouth, whereas eczema herpeticum occurs on areas of pre-existing eczema.

Herpes simplex

This is the causative virus, but the term "eczema herpeticum" is used for the specific, widespread dissemination of the virus on damaged eczematous skin.

Impetigo

While a bacterial superinfection of eczema is common, impetigo is characterized by honey-colored crusts, not the uniform vesicles or punched-out erosions of a viral superinfection.

Shingles

Shingles (herpes zoster) is confined to a single unilateral dermatome, whereas eczema herpeticum is widespread over areas of dermatitis.
