Acute lupus erythematosis

Can be triggered by sun, but presents as a classic 'malar rash' sparing the nasolabial folds and is a sign of systemic disease, not just a reaction to UV damage.

Airborne allergic contact dermatitis

An eczematous reaction, often with severe itching and eyelid involvement, caused by an allergen, not UV light itself.

Dermatomyositis

A photosensitive eruption, but is characterized by a violaceous (heliotrope) rash on the eyelids and Gottron's papules over the knuckles.

Drug phototoxicity

An exaggerated sunburn reaction caused by a photosensitizing medication, distinguished by the history of taking a new, relevant drug.

Polymorphic light eruption

A delayed hypersensitivity reaction to UV, presenting as itchy papules, plaques, or vesicles hours to days after sun exposure, not immediate erythema and pain.

Rosacea

Can be exacerbated by sun, but it is a chronic condition with persistent erythema, telangiectasias, and papulopustules, not an acute burn.
