Cyst Removal

What causes cysts?

The protective surface layer of the skin, the epidermis, is formed from a specialized cell type known as keratinocytes that are constantly renewed and shed. Occasionally - for reasons that are poorly understood - part of this surface layer can become implanted deeper within the skin where the cells can no longer be released and instead collect under the surface forming a cyst.

How are cysts removed?

Under local anaesthetic. I will make a cut over the surface of the cyst, gently separate the cyst from surrounding tissues and then extract it taking care that the entire lining of the cyst is removed to minimize the risk of the cyst regrowing. After removing the cyst I will use stiches close the wound in the skin surface to minimize scarring. These will need be removed 7-10 days after the procedure.

What are the risks of treatment?

The site will generally heal well to leave a linear scar, however risks include bleeding, haematoma formation, infection, pain (which rarely may be persistent), unsightly or keloid scar, numbness or burning, damage to nerves or blood vessels, pigmentary change (scar may be lighter or darker than the adjacent skin), wound dehiscence (the wound may separate requiring a longer period of healing and leaving a larger scar), prolonged discharge, recurrence and the need for further treatment according to the results of pathology. There is also a risk of bleeding after the procedure and it is advised not to travel home on public transportation alone. Please read the consent form (link below) for a full list of risks.
