Side Effects of Flushing Medications
While oral medications like beta-blockers and alpha-agonists can be very effective for controlling severe rosacea flushing, they can have side effects. It's important to weigh the benefits against the potential trade-offs.
Trade-offs for exercise, energy and mood
Because these medications lower blood pressure and/or heart rate, common side effects can include fatigue, dizziness, or light-headedness. Beta-blockers can sometimes blunt the heart rate response to exercise, making intense workouts feel more difficult. They can also occasionally cause mood changes or vivid dreams. Clonidine can also cause drowsiness and dry mouth, particularly when starting treatment.
Who should avoid which drugs?
These medications are not suitable for everyone. Beta-blockers should be used with caution or avoided in individuals with asthma, very low blood pressure (hypotension), or certain heart conditions. Treatment usually starts at a very low dose, which is then gradually increased.
