Dermatology Consultation
A dermatology consultation is an opportunity to have your skin concerns assessed and to discuss treatment options. Whether you have a specific skin problem or would like a general assessment of your moles, a consultation provides allows me to assess your skin, understand your concerns and make a personalised treatment plan.
Who should see a dermatologist?
You may benefit from a dermatology consultation if you have a skin condition that has not responded to treatment from your GP, or if you have a new or changing mole or skin lesion that you are concerned about. Patients with chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, acne or rosacea often benefit from specialist assessment, as do those with scarring, pigmentation or other cosmetic skin concerns. If a skin condition is affecting your quality of life or confidence, or if you need specialist treatments such as laser, surgery or prescription medication, a consultation can help.
What conditions do I see?
I see patients with a wide range of skin conditions in my clinics. Common reasons for a consultation include acne, rosacea, eczema and dermatitis, psoriasis, and skin cancer and mole concerns. I also frequently see patients with acne scarring, pigmentation problems such as melasma and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and hair and nail conditions including hair loss and alopecia.
Patients also attend for assessment and removal of skin lumps and lesions such as cysts, lipomas and skin tags, as well as skin infections including fungal infections and viral warts.
Please note that I do not treat patients under the age of 18, I do not prescribe tablet or injectable medications for eczema or psoriasis and I do not perfom patch testing for allergies.
How to prepare for your consultation
It is helpful to bring a list of current medications including any creams or skincare products you are using. It is also useful to note when the problem started, what treatments you have already tried, and whether anything makes the condition better or worse. If the condition changes in appearance — for example a rash that comes and goes — photographs taken at different times can be very helpful.
If you have any referral letters or previous test results, please bring these with you. If you would like me to examine a specific area of your body, wearing accessible clothing and removing makeup from that area can make the consultation easier.
What happens during the consultation
I will begin by asking you about your skin concerns and your medical history. I will then examine the affected areas of your skin. Depending on the nature of your concern, I may use a dermatoscope — a specialised skin microscope — to examine skin lesions in greater detail.
Following the examination, I will discuss my findings with you and explain the diagnosis. I will then outline the treatment options available, discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each, and help you to decide on a treatment plan that is right for you.
If further investigations are needed — such as a skin biopsy or blood tests — I will explain why these are recommended and arrange them for you.
After the consultation
Following your appointment you will receive a clear diagnosis and explanation of your condition, together with a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Any prescriptions that are required will be provided. You will also receive a letter (usually sent the same day) summarising the consultation for your records.
