When should I consider isotretinoin (Roaccutane) for my acne?
Isotretinoin (roaccutane) is a powerful treatment for acne, however it does have the potential for side effects (see our post on isotretinoin side effects). For this reason, in most countries, it is only prescribed by a dermatologist. Isotretinoin is usually considered for moderate or severe acne when previous systemic (tablet) treatments have not proven effective or where acne has recurred rapidly following another treatment such as antibiotics or the oral contraceptive pill. In some cases, where there is severe acne resulting in extensive scarring there is an argument for starting isotretinoin at an earlier stage.
